Who Should Be Screened?

Colorectal cancer screening is recommended for individuals aged 50 years and above. For those aged 45-49, screening is advised if there is a family history of colorectal cancer or if they have specific risk factors. The screening process involves a consultation to discuss your individual risk profile and the suitability of screening for your health.

Screening Modalities

Colorectal and gastric cancer screening in Singapore is guided by clinical guidelines to identify early lesions. The choice of modality is based on individual risk factors, age, and clinical history.

Colonoscopy

The gold standard for colorectal screening. It allows direct visualization of the entire colon and the removal of polyps during the same session. Recommended for individuals aged 50 and above, or those with a family history of colorectal cancer.

Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT)

A non-invasive screening method that detects hidden blood in the stool. It is recommended as a first-line screening tool for individuals aged 50 and above, particularly for those who are not suitable for colonoscopy.

Gastroscopy

Screening for gastric cancer is typically offered to individuals with a family history of gastric cancer or those with a history of Helicobacter pylori infection. It involves the visual inspection of the stomach lining using a flexible endoscope.

Consultation

Individual risk assessment and suitability for screening are discussed during a consultation. Risks, benefits, and preparation instructions are reviewed to ensure the chosen modality is appropriate for your health profile.
